Ready, Set, Grow: Your April Veggie Garden Kickstart

Fresh Ideas from White House Nursery to Get Growing This Spring

There’s nothing quite like stepping outside and harvesting something you’ve grown with your own hands. At White House Nursery, we know the vegetable garden is where memories are made — whether it’s your first homegrown tomato or a handful of sweet snap peas straight from the vine.

April is a perfect time to get your veggie garden started — and we’re here to help you every step of the way.

Start with Cool-Season Favorites

Early spring is all about cool-weather crops — the ones that thrive in crisp mornings and cool nights. These vegetables love to get growing before the summer heat arrives.

Great April Starters:

  • Lettuce & Salad Greens

  • Spinach

  • Kale

  • Peas

  • Radishes

  • Broccoli & Cabbage

  • Onions & Shallots

Many of these crops can be planted directly into the ground or raised beds right now. And if you’re starting with young plants (which we grow and stock here at White House Nursery), you’ll get a little head start on harvest time.

Prep Your Soil for Success

Healthy soil = healthy plants.

We always recommend taking a little time in early spring to prepare your garden beds. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Add compost to enrich the soil

  • Loosen the soil so roots can grow deep

  • Mix in an organic vegetable fertilizer

  • Mulch pathways to keep weeds down

If you need soil amendments, organic fertilizers, or planting advice — we’ve got it all here at White House Nursery.

Plan for Succession Planting

One of our favorite vegetable garden tricks? Succession planting.

Instead of planting all your seeds at once, plant small amounts every 2-3 weeks. This keeps the harvest coming steadily, rather than all at once.

Great veggies for succession planting:

  • Lettuce

  • Radishes

  • Carrots

  • Beets

  • Beans (later in the season)

We’d love to help you map out a planting schedule — just ask when you stop in!

Get Ready for Warm-Season Crops

April is all about preparing — but we know many of you are eager to get those tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers growing!

Hold off on planting tender crops until after the danger of frost has passed — but April is a perfect time to:

  • Start seeds indoors

  • Warm up your soil with black mulch or row covers

  • Pick out your favorite varieties from our veggie starts at White House Nursery

We’ll have a beautiful selection of garden-ready plants when the time is right!

Make It Fun & Make It Yours

A veggie garden doesn’t have to be complicated. Start small. Grow what you love to eat. Add a few flowers to attract pollinators or a small herb garden by your kitchen door.

Gardening is about learning, experimenting, and enjoying the process. And there’s no better place to dig in than right here at White House Nursery.

Stop in this April for seeds, veggie starts, soil supplies, and expert advice. We’d love to help you kickstart your best garden yet — let’s get growing!
