Important Order Information

  • If a selected seed variety becomes unavailable, we will offer a close substitution —
you are never obligated to accept a substitute.
  • Any orders not picked up by May 7 will be donated to local organizations such as 4-H, FFA, or Garden Clubs so the plants can still be enjoyed in the community.

  • Cutting flowers are grown to produce tall, healthy blooms. Your plants will be ready for the garden after you harden them off properly. They may not be blooming at pickup — and that’s exactly how they should be for the best transplant success.

Cut Flower Growing Guide

  1. Location: Choose a spot with at least 6 hours of sun daily and good drainage.
  2. Soil Prep: Amend soil with compost to add nutrients and improve water retention.
  3. Choose Flowers: Select different shapes and sizes for varied bouquets.
  4. Planting: Plant seedlings once the temperatures warm and danger of frost is gone. In our local area think ‘The week of Mother’s Day’.
  5. Pinching: Snip the top off young plants (like zinnias) above the second or third set of leaves to encourage bushier growth and more stems.
  6. Support: Provide support with netting or stakes. Prepare for tall plants while they are small or they will be hard to add support.
  7. Watering:  Water deeply and consistently at the base.
  8. Fertilizing: Cut flowers are heavy feeders; use a balanced fertilizer for blooms.
  9. Weeding: Don’t let weeds compete for water or nutrients. I like to use paper mulch.

Harvesting

  • When to Cut: Harvest in the early morning or late evening when flowers are most turgid.
  • How to Cut: Use sharp snips, cut stems at an angle, and immediately place them in a clean container of water.
  • Remove Foliage: Strip leaves below the water line to prevent rot and bacteria.
